Essentially de-cluttering is a relatively simple process that is complicated by our natural emotional feelings about our possessions and homes.
It is also hindered by the amount of possessions we accumulate over long periods of time, which is partly driven by the consumer society we now live in. We also all have very busy lives and scheduling time to undertake de-cluttering is difficult as there are so many priorities in modern households. It is therefore not surprising that the task of de-cluttering becomes way too overwhelming for an individual.
The process that we will follow together is as follows:
Decide which items are to be kept
Identify where in the home they are to used and stored
Identify practical storage so items can continue to be easily accessed and tidied
I can help you with this process for smaller projects such as a wardrobe, or for specific rooms, or for the entire house. It is up to you to decide how much de-cluttering you wish to tackle at any one time.
Once you have identified the area/s to be de-cluttered, and together we have identified the overall goals de-cluttering process can begin.
The de-cluttering process will broadly categorise items as follows, allowing them to be dealt with appropriately:
To be kept as is needed and used
To be kept as is wanted/ liked/loved
To be given to a friend/family member
To be donated to Charity
To be recycled
To be thrown away
Once the items to be kept are identified and sorted, like with like, then thought can be given to how the items are used in the house and where they are best kept so they are accessible and easy to tidy away. This process can be obvious and simple for personal clothing items that are to be kept in a wardrobe, but more complex, for example, when trying to identify the best place to store stationery, which is used frequently, in various places around the home, by different members of the household.
Often various temporary storage solutions are required to ensure that items are relocated in the best,’ rightful’ place in the house. It may take a while to decide the best place for an item, so initially this might just be a plastic storage box of items in the corner of the room that currently seems to be the best place.
I am a great advocate of using temporary, low-tech and cheap storage solutions in the first instance.
Cardboard boxes, shoeboxes, drawer dividers made from cardboard, cheap plastic boxes/drawers can be made to work in order to identify the best permanent solution. The time and effort invested in searching for new cupboards, bookcases, or putting up shelving is more effective when you know exact dimensions and volume of the existing temporary storage. Making a financial investment in a new piece of furniture is easier when you already know it will function well and be effective for your household. I will also undertake research on your behalf to source specific storage solutions.
